State Minister Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman (2005) assert, advances in technology are now able to change the cassava and palm oil into alternative energy in overcoming the crisis of fuel oil (BBM).

“Cassava can be processed into bioetanol and palm oil into biodiesel that can be used with a blend of ten percent of the four types of fuel,” said Kusmayanto Kadiman to journalists in Sanur, Bali, on Wednesday (13/7/2005).

Before the opening meeting of Marine Forum Indonesia (Indonesia Ocean Forum 2005 and the 13th PAMS / JECSS Workshop), he points out, mixing the fuel with 10 percent biodiesel and bioetanol very possible, according to provisions of the international set.
“If 10 percent of the mixing of fuel can be produced Indonesia, will be very helpful in saving the use of fuel,” he said.

Indonesian in Budget 2005 to allocate funds for fuel subsidy of Rp 90 trillion, with the calculation of the price of oil in the world market 35 U.S. dollars per barrel.

However, the current oil price conditions in the world market reached 60 U.S. dollars per barrel, that will influence the country’s financial subsidy.

Therefore, some alternative to the use of fuel has been offered, including the technology of processing cassava and palm oil.

Menristek rate, the application of the results of the processing technology should be supported by government policy, so that the public and private investors interested in implementing these technologies.

Application of technology of processing cassava and palm oil as fuel blender can not be done by the government, he said, claiming to have discussed the possibility of applying these technologies in a cabinet meeting.

Technology of processing of cassava into bioetanol actually already implemented in Lampung, but capacity is very limited. “Product bioetanol fuel blender as I have already applied to the car and 30 bus office employees, there is no problem,” said Menristek.

If both types of fuel blender that can be produced, will be able to save at least Rp 9 trillion a year in fuel subsidy, so Kusmayanto.
